National Foster Care Awareness Month with UMFS

May is Foster Care Awareness Month

Every Child Deserves a Champion
Right now, children across Virginia need safe, supportive foster homes. Foster parents provide love, stability, and guidance—helping children heal, grow, and thrive.
Fostering is a life-changing journey, and you don’t have to do it alone. Whether you’re ready to start the process or just want to learn more, we’re here to support you every step of the way.

What is Foster Care?
Foster care provides temporary homes for children who cannot live with their biological families. The goal is always to ensure a safe, loving environment—whether that means reunification with their families or finding a permanent home through adoption.
Foster parents play a crucial role in this process by offering stability and care during uncertain times.

Who Can Foster?
Foster parents come from all walks of life. You don’t need to be married, own a home, or have parenting experience. You just need a big heart and the willingness to make a difference.

Foster parents must:
• Be at least 21 years old
• Complete training and a home study
• Have a stable income and living environment
• Pass background checks

Ways to Get Involved
Not everyone can foster, but everyone can help! Here’s how you can make an impact:
Become a Foster Parent – Open your heart and home to a child in need.
Support Foster Families – Offer respite care, donate supplies, or provide community support.
Spread the Word – Share our mission and encourage others to learn more.
