Virginia Senate Approves Renewed Effort To Remove Same-Sex Marriage Ban

(Richmond)- Four Republicans joined Virginia Senate Democrats to support a renewed effort to repeal the state constitution’s ban on same-sex marriage. The Virginia Constitution includes language that defines marriage as “only a union between one man and one woman.” The General Assembly must pass a constitutional amendment two years in a row before voters get a chance to decide in a ballot referendum. The vote Senate sends the proposed constitutional amendment to the House of Delegates, where it is expected to fail after the Republican-led chamber already voted down an identical proposal. Among the Republicans who voted with Democrats was Fauquier Senator Jill Vogel.
