Dog Dies From Disease Contracted From River

(Albermarle)- A bacterial disease found in a state River is reportedly to blame for a dog’s death. An Albemarle County man says his German Shepherd contracted leptospirosis during a swim in the Rivanna River two weeks ago. It was four days later when the dog’s kidneys started to break down. The disease is not connected to the blue green algae that is considered the cause of death to at least four dogs across the southeast in the last week. Health officials advise to stay away from areas where lots of animals use the same water source.
