(Richmond)- Virginia Tech researchers have found a plant with a dangerous sap in Clarke County that can cause third-degree burns and blindness. Researchers say they found about 30 Giant Hogweed plants on a property in Clarke County last week. It is the first ever confirmed spotting of the plant in the state. Researchers stressed that the plants are believed to have been planted intentionally decades ago and haven’t spread in the years since. Anyone who finds the plant should report it to the Virginia Cooperative Extension.
